Client success story showcasing a new treatment to relieve back pain in Norfolk
I feel really lucky most days to have a job I love that helps get people out of pain. Back pain is something I have unfortunately suffered with so I have a real empathy for helping clients relieve their back pain.
Traditionally the medical profession uses a combination of pills, physiotherapy and exercise recommendations such as Pilates. In some cases, steroid or cortisone injections or surgery are suggested. I know the concern that clients have around back surgery and many have a reluctance to take too many pills, I know this was the case for me. Others prefer to try chiropractors or osteopaths which can work well for some.
I was lucky to find an amazing Pilates instructor that worked to relieve my back pain. However, sometimes Pilates isn’t an option (costs, time commitment etc.) or just isn’t something you want to do.
This is where neural reset therapy can come in. As one of only a small number of neural reset practitioners in the UK (at the time of writing this there are only 5 of us) and being the only practitioner in the South Norfolk area, I love introducing people to this new therapy.
Annette & her back pain
Annette was one such client. In her heart she was an active retiree but back pain was hindering her lifestyle.
In her 60s she loved walking, playing with her grandchildren, gardening, swimming and previously had enjoyed the odd round of golf. However, she was struggling with all this.
Back pain had plagued her for several years with a history of injections and a discectomy. A fall had resulted in hip surgery and the resulting loss of confidence and balance issues were causing her to stop doing things she loved.
She wanted to restore some balance, relieve her back pain and get back to an active life.
Annette wasn’t in the position to come weekly for private Pilates and wasn’t a fan of group classes having tried them in the past but had heard about neural reset therapy from a relative. She was keen to give it a go.
How I helped relieve her back pain
Before her first session, Annette filled in the obligatory health form and we had a chat about how long the back pain had been going on, her previous surgery, her lifestyle and hobbies and what she wanted out of the treatment (surprisingly to ‘relieve my back pain’ isn’t always the number 1 goal) and what activities she wanted to get back to.
Neural Reset Therapy works by resetting the tone of the muscles. This is done by introducing various and varied stimuli to the muscles, this can be through stretching, vibration or any other movement pattern that the mechanoreceptors in the muscle respond to. After explaining this and what movements and actions I needed from her we got started. In order to know which muscles to reset we needed to find the trigger points, areas that are tight and/or tender to the touch. It never ceases to surprise me how pain patterns spread from trigger points and to relieve back pain I often find myself working on a thigh or calf.
By working out which muscles were causing her pain we set about resetting each area using the various actions of those muscles and introducing the different stimuli accordingly.
By taking a detailed history, and knowing past injuries and surgery, even the ones that don’t seem relevant, it helps guide me to the best resets possible. In Annette’s case we worked mainly on her inside thighs and calves with some pelvis floor resets as well.
What happened after the first session
After the first session, it was a couple of weeks before she could get back to the studio and the results had been great. Annette found she was walking further before any pain or fatigue stopped her and she felt she was standing better and more balanced.
We have had 2 more sessions each about 3 weeks apart and the results have been fantastic. At a recent party where previously she would have needed a chair within the first few minutes, she found herself able to stand and talk with other guests, walk around and enjoy herself for the whole event.
However, best of all, her son had to ask her to slow down because she was walking so quickly. She found this so thrilling as only a couple of months earlier she needed an arm to lean on for reassurance when she walked.
Annette is not alone in finding relief for back pain through Neural Reset Therapy. I’m so happy when clients get back to what they want to do with their lives. Some need more sessions than Annette, others only need one or two.
Annette has decided that Neural Reset Therapy will be part of her life long term with top-up sessions every couple of months to allow her to be active in between sessions knowing that she has a non-surgical, drug-free way to relieve back pain if needed.
This method works well for many clients, coming back for preventative top-ups, just as some people have regular massages. Equally, others prefer to just book in as needed.
